Wien Mitte The Mall
3.7.2026
Vienna

The Exhibition MMM (Sunshine City) can be seen as a follow up show of the very first exhibition organized by the project in collaboration with the UK based artist Phoebe Longstaff, titled "Garden of Eldon", which was set within the interior of an empty half-dead shopping center. The Exhibition MMM (Sunshine City) refers back to this exhibition, now taking place inside a fully functioning mall and it´s rooftop parking lot. The headline "MMM" refers to the first letters of the three protagonists of the show, Marie, Marcus and Wien Mitte or the Mall, which is the name of a shopping mall in the center of the city of Vienna just a few walking minutes from the University of Applied Arts Vienna. One image that can be seen as an influence is Jörg Immendorff's iconic painting titled "Wo stehst du mit deiner Kunst, Kollege?", which depicts a painter in his studio, being interrupted by a colleague, pointing outside the studio door, into the direction of a political protest. The image is being recontextualized by referring to the outside as the shopping center, and the inside as the nearby art school. The shopping center is the place where it happens, where "the people" are. The undertitle Sunshine City, defines the mood or can be read as another alternative name for the world within which the exhibition takes place. A world of stacked shops and endless offers of goods. Within this setting the two Vienna-based artists Marcus Wagner and Marie Schallie temporarily installed their current works, which are on one hand Marie's more positive two-dimensional colorful works, which can be described as positive landscape mark makings, or playing the ball paintings, and on the other hand Marcus' more dark-coded sculptural works, which try to occupy the scenery of the mall with their ghostly appearance mirroring the mall´s real life shopping ghosts, showing the self within this manic place or offering alternatives like hiding or transforming to a more spiritual beeing.
